We had some cold and snow the first week of February 2022. Okay, it’s not as bad as February 2021, and it didn’t last as long, but between February 2 and 4 temps were in the teens single digits and we had about 6 to 7 inches of snow.
I know that’s not bad compared to some parts of the country. But for us, it’s cold. And frankly, I’m not a fan of the snow and neither are the chickens.
We’ve discovered bad things can happen when chickens are cooped up in small areas for too long. I’m not sure if they just get bored or just get mean out of frustration.
We lost 2 birds in 2 days during this cold weather. In both instances the girls were just bullied to death as best we can tell. We put straw on the ground as soon as the wind subsided enough it wouldn’t blow away. But it just wasn’t soon enough.
The hens just don’t like snow and won’t come out in it if they don’t have to. We even had to put their food and water in the coop because they wouldn’t come out. I can’t say I blame them.
This is our February 2 through 4, 2022 here. Tell us what your snow days were like.
